Memoir Writing Workshop

As a long-time professor of memoir writing at Columbia and NYU SPS, I can say with confidence that all of us have an unforgettable true story to tell. But questions abound. How do you take the raw, messy material of your lived experience and shape it into a unique, well-crafted story that others will find engrossing? How do you wade through the murky, unreliable depths of memory to find truth and beauty? How do you know where to start? Where to stop? How do you know if it's any good?

In this small-group virtual workshop, we will answer these questions and more. Through reading and analyzing exemplary published works, we'll closely examine how memoirists craft narrative voice, character, point of view, descriptive detail, dialogue, as well as plot and structure. Throughout, students will undertake short writing prompts to generate ideas and hone skills. Halfway through the course, the focus will shift to workshopping students' submissions, so that students can benefit from careful and constructive feedback from readers, including me.
